白字戲，原指中國廣東省粤东地區流行的以粤東閩語演唱而得名的戲曲劇種：潮州白字戲和海陸豐白字戲。潮州白字后来演变成潮剧，而海陆丰地区仍称白字戏，白字戏之名现在所指是海陆丰白字戏。



潮州白字戲


潮州白字戲現通稱潮劇，「白字戲」名稱今多特指盛行於汕尾市的白字戲，「白字」是同唱、念都用中州韵的正字戏相对而言。



海陸豐白字戲


相對於「潮州白字」（流行在潮州、汕頭、揭陽3個地級市）稱為海陸豐白字或南下白字（潮州白字又稱「頂頭白字」）。



综述


它們都在海內外的潮州人、鶴佬人聚落盛行，在通行鶴佬白話的台灣也曾大大流行，清代的台灣很興白字戲和正字戲；官音戲，20世紀時還有職業的潮州戲班，現時台灣已沒有在地職業劇團的營業演出，偶有香港或潮汕的劇團來公演。


潮劇和海陸豐（汕尾）白字戲都列進了2006年中國國務院第1批国家级非物质文化遗产名录。
